HB 1446 and SB 627 make significant changes to the current DUI law. First, they eliminate periods of "hard suspension" where those accused of DUI could not, under any circumstances, get even limited driving privileges. For example, under the current law, a first offender cannot drive until the 31st day after a statutory summary suspension takes effect. Second, the new law gives those subject to lifetime revocation an opportunity to get restricted driving privileges with the use of a BAID device, allowing people to drive to work while insuring they are not driving under the influence. These changes were support by both MADD and the Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists.
